The full review
Where it fits
The NV7400 is BIWIN's PCIe Gen4 x4, NVMe 2.0 drive in the Black Opal range. It uses the Maxio MAP1602 controller and has no DRAM. It comes in the M.2 2280 size and is single-sided. That makes it a candidate for desktop slots and for laptops or small builds where board thickness matters.
Sources include reviews of the 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models, plus retailer listings and community threads.
Speed
BIWIN's spec table for the 1TB model lists 7400MB/s sequential read and 6500MB/s sequential write. The manufacturer headline and the Amazon listing say up to 7450MB/s read. The drive is rated for up to 1000K random read IOPS.
Owner and reviewer feedback agrees on fast reads and writes and easy installation. The weaker points are specific. Write speed drops after the cache is exhausted. Small random I/O is weaker than a rival's, though the research doesn't name which one. Because the drive is DRAM-less, those points matter most for large sustained transfers and for workloads that lean on small random access. For game loading, OS drives and general desktop use, the headline figures are the relevant ones.
Heat and form factor
The drive includes a 0.5mm graphene thermal pad with smart temperature control. PC Gamer reports low temperatures. Other feedback says it can run warm under sustained load, depending on airflow. Both can hold at once: temperatures depend on the case and slot, and sustained writes are where heat shows up. If your board has a heatsink over the M.2 slot, use it for long copy jobs.
The research lists no power draw figures, so there is nothing to say on efficiency for laptops beyond the single-sided design.
Endurance and warrantyEndurance 6/10Warranty 8/10
BIWIN rates the 1TB model at 1000 TBW. The figures in the research cover that capacity only, so check the manufacturer's page for the capacity you plan to buy. For homelab use with heavy logging, databases or frequent rewrites, work out your daily write volume against the rating before buying.
The warranty is five years, limited, with free replacement. That is a clear point in the drive's favour. It gives a defined remedy if the drive fails, which matters because owner reports on reliability are mixed and anecdotal. Nothing in the research points to a pattern of failures, but nothing rules out individual cases either.
Software5/10
The drive ships with Biwin Intelligence management software and a Biwin Data Recovery Tool. Those are useful extras for checking drive status and trying to recover files. The research doesn't describe how firmware updates are delivered or what the firmware track record looks like, so that is the gap. If you rely on a documented update path for your fleet, check BIWIN's support pages first.
Price and value
PC Gamer mentions good value. Other feedback mentions a higher price than rivals. Those two views fit together if you judge by use: the speed, warranty and thermal pad help, but feedback says small random I/O is weaker than a rival's. Compare current prices against the specific workloads you run.
Verdict
With 7400MB/s read, 6500MB/s write and a five-year warranty, the NV7400 suits desktop and laptop users doing general work, gaming and large reads. Its DRAM-less design, cache-exhausted write slowdown and weaker small random I/O make it a poorer match for sustained heavy writes or random-heavy server jobs. Buyers should also weigh the mixed reliability reports and the limited software detail against the warranty.
What owners report
Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.
- Owners and reviewers praise fast read and write speeds and easy installation.
- PC Gamer reports low temperatures and good value, though some feedback says it runs warm under sustained load depending on airflow.
- Write speed drops once the cache is exhausted, and small random I/O is weaker than a rival's.
- Reliability reports are mixed and anecdotal, and some mention a higher price than rivals.
Who should skip it
- Buyers who need steady write speed under long sustained loads
- Anyone whose workload leans on small random I/O
- Buyers who need documented firmware update tooling
