The Yubico YubiKey 5 NFC is for people who want one hardware key to cover FIDO2 passkeys plus older sign-in methods such as OTP, PIV smart card and OpenPGP. It suits those whose computers have USB-A ports and who also want tap-to-authenticate over NFC.

New to security keys? What they are and what to look for
A security key is a small USB or NFC device you use to sign in to accounts. Even if someone steals your password, they can't get in without the key in your hand.
Do you need a security key? One of the strongest protections for your email, bank and work accounts. Recommended for anyone, and especially for people at higher risk of being targeted.
What to look for
- Buy two, so you have a backup if one is lost
- USB-C and NFC work with modern laptops and phones
- FIDO2 and passkey support

The full review
Where it fits
The YubiKey 5 NFC is a small hardware security key from Yubico. It measures 18 × 45 × 3.3 mm and connects over USB-A or NFC. It targets people who want a single key to handle modern passkey sign-in and several older authentication methods.
Protocols9/10
This is the strongest part of the specification. The key supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO CTAP 1, CTAP 2 and 2.1, and U2F. It also supports PIV smart card, Yubico OTP, OATH-HOTP and TOTP, OpenPGP, and static passwords.
That range matters if your needs go beyond web logins. A sysadmin who signs in to servers with smart card credentials, signs commits with OpenPGP, or stores TOTP secrets on the key can use one device for all of it, based on the protocol list. A buyer who only wants passkeys for a few web accounts will use a fraction of it.
Connectivity5/10
The connectors are USB-A and NFC (ISO 14443-3 Type A). The manufacturer states there is no USB-C. That limits the key's fit: it plugs into USB-A ports directly, and NFC gives a tap option for devices that read it.
If your main laptop has only USB-C ports, the listed connectors do not cover direct plug-in use. The research does not say what alternatives exist, so check your own hardware before buying. If your machines have USB-A, the connector matches.
Passkey storage9/10
Passkey capacity depends on firmware. The key holds 100 passkeys on firmware 5.7 and later, and 25 on firmware 5.0 to 5.6. The listed firmware is 5.8, which falls in the 100-slot range, four times the 25-slot figure for the earlier range.
Because the 25-slot figure applies to firmware 5.0 to 5.6, confirm the firmware version of the key you receive if capacity matters to you.
Certification and firmware6/10
The key carries FIDO2 Level 2, CTAP 2.1 and FIDO U2F certification. It is not FIPS certified. Yubico sells a separate FIPS 140-3 product for that requirement, so buyers with a compliance need should look at that model instead.
The research does not cover whether the firmware can be updated, whether it is open source, or what Yubico's security advisory record looks like. Those points are open, and a reader who weighs them heavily should check Yubico's own documentation before buying.
Durability7/10
The key is rated IP68 for water and dust. Yubico states it is crush resistant up to 25 N·m. Operating temperature runs from 0 to 40 °C, and storage temperature from −20 to 85 °C.
Those ratings suit a key that lives on a keyring or in a bag, based on the water, dust and crush figures. The warranty is one year for perpetual purchases. The research gives no further detail on warranty terms.
Verdict
The YubiKey 5 NFC lists support for FIDO2, U2F, PIV, OTP, OATH and OpenPGP, among other protocols. Its main strengths on paper are that protocol coverage, 100-slot passkey capacity on firmware 5.7 and later, and its IP68 build. Its limits are clear from the specification: no USB-C connector, no FIPS certification, and a one-year warranty. Buyers with USB-A ports who want passkeys plus PIV, OTP or OpenPGP in one key fit it well. Those who need USB-C directly on the key, or FIPS compliance, should look elsewhere.
Who should skip it
- Buyers whose devices only have USB-C ports and want a key that plugs in directly
- Organisations that need FIPS 140-3 certification
- People who only want basic passkeys and will not use PIV, OTP or OpenPGP
