Logitech C270 HD Webcam
4.7out of 10verdict: skip

The Logitech C270 is for people who want a simple USB webcam for video calls and nothing more. It suits a desk where setup should take seconds and the microphone has to do the job without a headset.

New to webcams? What they are and what to look for

A webcam is a small camera that sits on your monitor for video calls and streaming.

Do you need a webcam? Worth it if your laptop's built-in camera looks grainy, or you use a desktop PC without one.

What to look for

  • 1080p is enough for calls; good low-light performance matters more than 4K
  • Autofocus and a built-in privacy shutter
  • Works without extra software on your computer

The full review

Where it fits

The C270 is a basic USB webcam. Logitech lists it at 720p and 30 fps, not 1080p. It has a 55° diagonal field of view, fixed focus and a built-in mono microphone with noise reduction. It connects over USB-A with a 1.5 m fixed cable.

That spec sheet points to one use: video calls from a desk. It does not point to streaming, content work or anything that depends on image detail.

Picture quality4/10

Logitech lists the C270 at 720p and 30 fps, not 1080p. Owner reports point the same way on detail. A recurring complaint is a soft image. Colour is another complaint, with owners saying it changes depending on the lighting in the room.

Focus is fixed. Logitech's spec table lists autofocus as No, so you cannot adjust it. Owners also mention that there is no zoom.

The sources disagree slightly on field of view. Logitech says 55° diagonal, while one third-party review says 60°. Check how much of your desk or room you want in frame before you buy.

Low light4/10

Logitech lists automatic light correction. That is a separate feature from autofocus or auto-framing, and neither of those is listed. The research gives no sensor size and no low-light measurements, so there is little to say about how it behaves in a dim room beyond that.

The owner theme about colour changing with room lighting is the most relevant evidence. If your room lighting varies through the day, expect the picture to vary with it.

Microphone7/10

The built-in microphone is mono and noise-reducing. Owners praise the clarity of voice. For calls, that means you may not need a separate microphone or headset.

Spec sources conflict on range. Logitech's product page gives 1.5 m, while a spec table gives 1 m. Treat 1 m as the safer assumption and sit close to the camera.

Features and privacy3/10

The feature list is short. There is no autofocus, no auto-framing and no privacy shutter. Logitech's privacy spec reads "None". If you want a physical cover, you will need to sort that out yourself, since the camera does not include one.

Owners describe the feature set as basic and call the stand flimsy. The cable is fixed at 1.5 m, so you cannot swap it for a longer one. On the positive side, the camera is plug-and-play, and the research lists no extra software requirement for basic use.

Compatibility and setup7/10

Logitech lists support for Windows 10 and later, macOS 10.15 and later, and ChromeOS. Its education sheet says the camera works in USB video device class mode with supported clients.

The research found no source that explicitly confirms Linux support. If you run Linux, check before buying rather than assuming. The device class note is not an explicit Linux claim.

Ease of setup is the top owner praise, alongside value for money. That fits the plug-and-play USB-A connection and the short feature list. There is little to configure.

Who it suits

The C270 suits someone who needs a working webcam for calls and values low cost and simple setup. With 720p30 output, fixed focus and owner reports of a soft image, it is a poor match for anyone who cares about picture detail. With no shutter listed, it also needs a workaround for anyone who wants physical privacy.

The microphone is its better-supported strength. Owners praise voice clarity, and the mic is built in, so it can cover basic calls without extra kit.

What owners report

Recurring themes from public owner feedback, summarised in our own words.

  • Owners praise easy setup and value for money.
  • Owners say the built-in microphone gives clear voice.
  • Owners criticise the basic feature set, with no zoom, fixed focus and a flimsy stand.
  • Owners report colour changing with room lighting and a soft image.
Who should skip it
  • Anyone who wants a sharp 1080p picture for streaming or content work
  • Buyers who need autofocus, auto-framing or a built-in privacy shutter
  • Linux users who need confirmed support before buying
